Upcoming films I am itching to watch

  • Editor: Team Aijou

I'll gladly fill an oversized bucket with popcorn for these movies.

Lord knows that, with everything going on in the world, it’s been a long time since I went to see a movie at the cinema. There’s nothing quite like it: the leather seats staged for the ultimate view, the dark atmosphere designed to heighten your senses for the perfect experience and, let’s not forget,  the boxes of popcorn, which often get kicked around once left forgotten on the floor.

It’s an experience I dearly miss. However, not being able to go to the cinema doesn’t mean that I can’t get excited about upcoming titles. And 2020 - 2021 certainly have a few films that I am just itching to see, and so I’ve made a list of movies which I feel are worth being excited for - hopefully you agree...

Love and Monsters

I feel like this film will change my view of romantic comedies. With major Zombieland vibes, Love and Monsters is an upcoming post-apocalyptic action romantic comedy which stars Dylan O’Brian as Joel Dawson. We follow Joel on his journey to reach his old high school sweetheart, who he made contact with after living underground for seven years due to the Monster-pocaylspe. On his journey, we meet, run, and hide from a variety of monsters which have claimed our world to themselves, very much like War of the Worlds. Along the way, he meets a group of unlikely friends who help him on his adventure, including a kick-ass girl who can fight much better than Joel (who is a little bit of a coward). Joel also meets a dog who becomes his new best friend.

Love and Other Monsters is due to release 16 October 2020, which you can see on VOD (Video on Demand).

Everything about this film sounds amazing: Dune will follow the first half of Frank Herbert’s 1965 novel, with a sequel following the second. It is an epic science-fiction movie which boasts a talented cast, including Timothee Chamelet, Zendaya, Oscar Isaac, Josh Brolin, Dave Bautista, Jason Momoa, and Javier Bardem.

This dystopian future of humanity starts with Duke Leto Atreides accepting the stewardship of Dune - formally known as Arrakis. Dune is home to the most valuable source in the universe, “The Spice”, which is a drug that extends the life of humans, among other supernatural things.

However, soon after Leto takes control of the Spice mining operation, a bitter betrayal leads us following Paul and Jessica’s journey to the natives of Dune They live deep in the farthest reaches of the desert.

Now, I am a slut for anything dystopian, and this film looks incredible. I’m also incredibly excited about the soundtrack composed by the astonishing composer Hans Zimmer, who is a huge fan of the book.

The release of Dune was originally planned for this year but has been delayed to next late 2021.

The Eternals

Now, I only heard of this film when Disney detailed the future of Marvel, and it looks sick. It honestly has one of the coolest casts I’ve ever witnessed and explores an immortal alien race created by the celestials, who have secretly lived on earth for thousands of years. After a tragic event following the story of Avengers: Endgame, they must reunite to protect humanity from their evil counterparts, the Deviants.

If your getting withdrawal symptoms from the events of the Avengers - much like I am - then this film will hit the spot. With such a varied cast, including the likes of Richard Madden, Gemma Chan, Kumail Nanjiani, Salma Hayek, Angelina Jolie, and Kit Harington, I cannot think of a more exciting release -except for Black Widow, of course.

The Eternals will premiere 5 November  2021, as a part of Phase 4 of the Marvel Universe.

The King’s Man

I fell in love with the first two films of this franchise, and I know that the third will be no different. The King’s Man is set to be a period action-comedy and will be a prequel to the first two instalments.

This film shows the birth of The Kingsman as they try to overthrow sinister forces that are plotting a war to wipe out millions of people. The King’s Man goes back to World War I as an origin story of “the very first independent intelligence agency”. A few people seem to be quite upset that the prequel won’t involve Eggsy; however, I’m still quite interested to see the origin story of The Kingsman that we all know and love. The director has also mentioned that a third Kingsman film will be in the making to give the fans a final chapter on Harry and Eggsy’s relationship. Even if you love the first films and are bummed that our favourite characters won’t be in the movie, please give it a chance - you never know, it might become your favourite!

This film has been pushed back so many times, but the release date is now February 26, 2021, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

A Quiet Place Part II

We last left the Abbot family defending their house against the monsters that hunt by sound, after the father, Lee, sacrificed himself to save his children. For this film, we watch the last of the Abbott family traverse the new world beyond their house, as it is no longer safe. They soon begin to realise that the monsters aren’t the only threats out there.

On their new adventure, we meet Emmet, played by Cillian Murphy, who seems to have ulterior motives. Djimon Hounsou also joins the cast, but we have yet to learn what role he plays. The sequel to A Quiet Place looks no less thrilling than the first, with double the suspense. We also get a glimpse of how the apocalypse started due to flashbacks.

The film was set to debut earlier this year in March but, due to COVID-19, the movie is now to be released next April in cinemas.

Happiest Season

I’ve wanted an LGBTQ Christmas film for so long, and now we are finally getting one. Happiest Season looks exceptionally wholesome with a dash of gay drama.

Harper (Mackenzie Davis) is planning to propose to her girlfriend, Abby (Kristin Steward). However, Harper has more to worry about than just Abby’s response, as she learns that Abby has been keeping their relationship a secret from her conservative parents. Ouch. Because of these worries, Harper begins to question if Abby is who she says she is. I don’t blame her really; I’d be a bit perplexed too if I learnt that my girlfriend had kept me a secret from her family. This film looks as if it will have a Meet the Fockers-vibe, a lot of laughs, some cringe moments, but also some moments which will make you feel all warm and funny.

Even though Happiest Season is set to release on the 27th of November in cinemas, I haven’t found any official trailers. However, there are a lot of promotional photos and videos on social media to watch out for!

No Time to Die

Probably the most hyped up film of the year, No Time to Die will be the 25th instalment of the James Bond franchise. The marketing team has been nothing but generous with the promotional videos and photos released in the past months.

This film looks awesome, and I know I’ve said that about every movie on this list but that’s because they all look awesome. I feel like No Time to Die will tie up loose ends from Daniel Craig’s previous films, and will also reveal the true motives of Dr Madeleine Swann from Spectre, which ominously could “be the death of him”. Of course, production has worked hard to ensure that No Time to Die will be extraordinary, and rightfully so, as this will be Daniel Craig's last contribution to the James Bond universe.

James Bond: No Time to Die was set to release in cinemas last April, but sadly, due to COVID-19, it has been postponed yet again to 2 April 2021.
