At the Super Mario Bros. 35th Anniversary Direct on 3rd September 2020, Nintendo revealed a new Game & Watch.
Super Mario Bros. reaches 35 years on September 18th, and Nintendo is celebrating by releasing the original Nintendo Entertainment System title in the form of a new Game & Watch. You will be able to play, not only Super Mario Bros., but also Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels and a Mario Bros. themed version of “Ball” starring Mario instead of Mr Game & Watch. Ball was the first Game & Watch game released in 1980 - incidentally celebrating its 40th Anniversary.
Additionally, the Game & Watch will also feature a clock in Super Mario Bros. style. To keep with the 35th Anniversary theme, Nintendo has added 35 little touches to discover as well. These features are currently unbeknownst to us, but when the device is in people’s hands, these hidden features will surely be revealed.
Nintendo’s “Game & Watch”-series were very popular in the ’80s and early ’90s. Unfortunately, it was an inevitability that dedicated handheld devices were getting smaller and eventually encroached on the market of the Game and Watch. Nintendo effectively ceased manufacturing them completely, leaving the market to the Nintendo GameBoy Colour, Bandai Wonderswan, NeoGeo Pocket and many other handhelds.
With the classic title celebrating its 35th anniversary, it’s a throwback to the ‘80s when Super Mario Bros. and the Game & Watch were first released, this time with a colour LCD screen, as opposed to the classic black and white stepped LCD screen.
Game & Watch: Super Mario Bros. will be released on November 13th at a price of $49.99. Be fast, as this will be a limited production.
