Rainbow Six Siege coming to next gen consoles with cross-gen support

.. but no cross-platform support.

In an interview with Windows Central, Leroy Athanassof - the game's director - stated that Ubisoft is aiming for Rainbow Six Siege to be available on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X at launch. With this news, it seems that Ubisoft is aiming to support the game for another year or two, considering the title originally released in December 2015. A release date cant' be shared, Athanassof said; "those dates are, in the end, on the people doing the next-gen consoles".

With that release, Ubisoft also aims to bring cross-gen along. "We don't want to break our community. So, we want people who buy the new system right away to play it with their friends." Cross-gen would mean that PlayStation 5 owners will be able to play games with players that own the previous generation of PlayStation. Cross-play is also being discussed and considered, although Athanassof states that "this is more a discussion between Microsoft and Sony." He also states that they are ready to support this feature, hoping that it will happen in the upcoming future. "It's a general move in the industry, and there is nothing that can prevent that. It's just a matter of time before it happens."

As for cross-play between consoles and PC, Ubisoft has considered it but doesn't see it happening any time soon, due to the input differences between a controller and a mouse and keyboard combination. "The only way we could do that kind of stuff is by letting you do that if you want to", he explains; by default, you always matchmaking with console players but you could potentially have an option to play against PC players, "to have better matchmaking, or whatever, and get your ass kicked by a keyboard and mouse, up to you." Another reassurance comes with the confirmation of cross-platform progression; this would allow players to migrate accounts between platforms.

Not included in this interview were details about the release on next-gen consoles; will it be a re-released version, optimised for the upcoming consoles, or will the game be enhanced on the upcoming platforms? Will the account migration mean that we can continue playing on any platform we desire, or will we have to commit to that specific platform from that point on? With no answers to these questions, we hope more details will surface soon.
